day four. A story about a time you were very afraid.
The summer of 2012, a group from my church and I flew down to Costa Rica for mission work. The last two days there, we headed up into the mountains to Monteverde to have some child fun time. One of the things we did was zip lining (which everyone should try to do while in Costa Rica – it is amazing!). As we were nearing the end of hopping from one line to the next, we did some walking in the forest to a long and high staircase. At the very top was two very long and thick ropes that just swayed in the wind.
I was not very sure what it was but when I saw the first person do it…I was really beginning to have my doubts. Slowly but surely I made my way up the stairs until I was at the top. There was a man there, he took my harness and tied it to the ropes. Looking down, there was a cement floor and a hundred or so feet away was the edge of the cliff. Holding tightly onto the rope, I took a step into the air.
My first reaction was a loud terrifying scream as gravity rushed me to the ground. As soon as I thought I was going to hit the cement floor, the rope straighten and swung me like a swing. After a few minutes, I slowed to a stop and a man at the bottom untied me and I was free to go.
I really don’t remember screaming but when I walked out, my friends asked me if I was okay. Apparently, they had not expected a scream such as the one that came from my mouth. I can still remember the feeling of my stomach being left at the top as I plummet to the bottom. I was shaking from fear as continued my way to the next line.
I am sure years from now, we will still be joking about how terrified I was. I just know, I will NEVER ever do the Tarzan Swing ever again.
