What was the one experience that completely changed your life? What happened? How did it change your life?
Last year, Summer of 2012, my bi-district went on a mission trip to Costa Rica. It was an amazing opportunity to go outside the states. We prepared for a year to get the money to be able to go.
When we first arrived, the first thing you notice is how unclean the country is. There was not that many bright colors and it was not the city-like at all. As we took a bus down to the place we were going to stay, there were many fields of sugar cane and coffee beans. Those are two very common plants that are harvested in Costa Rica.
The first day was just downtime but when the sun came up the next morning. Oh boy did we get a wake up call. We did a lot of vigorous work such as making cement and wheel barreling it a hundred or so feet. We dug a trench and fixed up a house. For most of the day, we did this for four or five days. About four in the afternoon, we would walk back to our living area which was uphill.
Despite all the physical challenges, it was also mentally working. To see how these people lived while we had so much more. We talked to the people, to learn their stories. It was heartbreaking.
The entire trip just put my view on how I live upside down. It really changed the way I thought about the things that I have. Yes, now and then I do slip back into my former habits. But I am forever grateful of being able to go on that trip. There was just so much going on that helped me. It was just amazing.
